Federal Skilled Worker Program - Express Entry

Express Entry Program, launched on January 1, 2015, sped up the application processing time. Applicants were invited to become permanent residents of Canada within six months. Applicants in Express Entry program must meet requirements for one of the following programs

Application Eligibility

Federal Skilled Worker Program

  • Must have at least 1 year (1560 hours) working experience in the same type of job as primary NOC (NOC 0, A, B)
  • English proficiency must meet CLB Level 7 and above in all four abilities
  • If applicant went to school in Canada, he or she must have a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary school
  • If applicant has foreign education, he or she must have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an approved agency showing that your foreign education is equal to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary school
  • Over 18 years old
  • In addition to the above criteria,an application will be assessed based on applicant’s age, education, work experience, valid job offer, English and/or French language skills and adaptability. Applicant must obtain a minimum score of 67 points out of 100 points

Federal Skilled Trade Program

  • Must meet the minimum English standard (CLB Level 5 in listening and speaking, CLB Level 4 in reading and writing)
  • Have at least 2 years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the 5 years before application(NOC type B)
  • Have an offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least 1 year or a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority
  • No education requirement for the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Applicant may earn points for education under Express Entry with either a Canadian post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree, or completed foreign credentials and Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an agency approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Canadian Experience Class

  • At least 12 months (1560 hours) of skilled work experience in Canada in the last 3 years (before applying). The work was: full-time or equivalent part-time amount in part-time. Skill type must be NOC 0, A or B
  • Must meet minimum English standard: CLB Level 7 in all English abilities for skill type NOC 0, A; CLB Level 5 in all English abilities for skill type NOC B
  • No education requirement for Canadian Experience Class. Applicant may earn points for education under Express Entry, if: he or she went to school in Canada, and has a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary school; the applicant has foreign education and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an approved agency showing that his or her foreign education is equal to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian: secondary (high school) or post-secondary school.

Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System

  • IRCC will assess and score applicant based on age, education, marital status, English proficiency, working experience, adaptability, etc. Total score is 1200. Applicant who is nominated by one of the Provinces, or obtains valid Job offer, will earn extra points. For detailed ranking criteria, please check IRCC’s website.

Express Entry Application Procedure

  • Applicant must register and create an Express Entry online profile from IRCC’s website
  • IRCC scores and ranks applicants based on several factors such as applicant’s education, work experience and language capability. After registration, applicant will receive total scores and will be put in a pool with others who are also eligible. Applicant can update the profile to improve his/her score any time.
  • IRCC selects the highest-ranking candidates from the pool and invites them to apply for permanent residence. Candidates must complete their Permanent Residence applications within 60 days upon receipt of invitation
